World Ocean Day is an international
day that takes place annually on 8th June. The purpose of the Day is
to inform the public about the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a
worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the
world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's
oceans. Dr. M.Anand, Coordinator of
Beach cleanup activity, Department of Marine and Coastal Studies, Madurai
Kamaraj University, organized the programme and welcomed the gathering. The
Programme was inaugurated by Professor Dr. S. Kannan, Member-Syndicate, Madurai
Kamaraj University and he emphasized the impact of microplastics on marine life
and encouraged students to segregate the biodegradable and non-biodegradable at
home itself. Dr. C. Anand, Assistant Professor, Directorate of
Sustainable Aquaculture, Mandapam Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture, Tamil
Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, delivered awareness lecture on
cleanliness and hygiene in the coastal beaches, Ms. H. Noorul Samsoon Maharifa,
Asst. Professor & Head, Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Arts &
Science for Women, has delivered the felicitation address. About 120 volunteers
are involved in cleaning Pudumadam beach.

The Cleanup data has revealed the
composition of various marine debris along the coasts which includes, plastic
bottles, Thermocol, plastic wrappers, glass bottles, paper cups, cigarette
buds, plastic bottle caps, etc. Most (80%) of the debris in our beaches and
shorelines are due to anthropogenic activities. The debris travel through storm
drains or creeks into the beaches and ocean. Most of the debris are Plastic
bottles and Plastic wrappers (55%) which is followed by glass bottles (20%) and
others include cigarette buds, bottle caps, straws, nets etc., make up the
remaining percentage (25 %). The recyclable things like paper are very few when
compared to the non-biodegradable things. The district administration should
empower strict laws for the tourists coming here to make the beaches trash free
and ensure the source segregation should be carried at individual houses.
Volunteers students from the Dept. of Marine and Coastal Studies, School of Energy Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Velu Manoharan Arts and Science College for Women, Ramnad, Sethupathy Govt.
