AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON BEACH CLEANUP ON THE EVENT OF INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY ON 21.09.2024 IN THE PUDUMADAM BEACH, GULF OF MANNAR, RAMANATHAPURAM DISTRICT

Text Box: On the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day on 21.09.2024, the Department of Marine and Coastal Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, organized a beach cleanup awareness event. Every year, the third Saturday of September is observed globally as International Coastal Cleanup Day. On this day, volunteers from around the world participate in cleaning beaches and coastal areas. The Coastal Cleanup Day is dedicated to the improvement of beaches, coastal regions, and their surroundings across the globe. This global volunteer event has been taking place for 38 consecutive years. At the event organized by the DMCS-MKU, around 250 student volunteers, fisherman and public were educated on the importance of International Coastal Cleanup.Inauguration of ICCD-2024

 

 

Text Box: •	The event was coordinated by Dr. M. Anand, Head of the Department, Marine and Coastal Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, who delivered the welcome address.  
•	Dr. K. Vinod, Principal Scientist and Head of the Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI, inaugurated the event.  
•	Dr. B. Mayilvaganan, Member of the Syndicate and Convenor Committee, Madurai Kamaraj University, delivered the presidential address.  
•	Dr. S. Kannan, Professor and Head of the School of Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources at Madurai Kamaraj University, and a member of the Syndicate, delivered a felicitation address.

Coastal Cleanup Activities: Trash collected by students volunteers

 

Text Box: •	The awareness campaign highlighted segregating wet and dry waste at source facilitates efficient solution in combating marine pollution.  Solid waste segregation at source is least likely to be contaminated with other types of pollutants and therefore more likely to be recycled.  Therefore it will gradually reduce the composition of home based debris encountered at coastal regions.

7.	Self Help Group and Local Fishermen from Mandapam and Pudumadam Village

Around 250 students participated in the event. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to students who excelled in their contributions.

Text Box: Cleanup Data:
•	On International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD-2024) conducted in Pudumadam beach, a total of 2,440 items weighing 152.7 kg were collected. Plastics accounted for the majority of the waste, comprising 76.35% of the total items and 45.64% of the total weight. Other notable categories included rubber, papers, and clothes, which collectively made up a significant portion of the collected waste.
