Report - Talk on “Sea Exports during V.O.C. period”

 

The School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources celebrated 75th year Independence day, 2022 Azadi ka Amrit Mahatsav in the Seminar Hall of the school, Madurai Kamaraj University on 05.08.2022 between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. On the event, the sense of happiness and pride could be clearly seen on the faces of the entire participants as India commemorating its 75th year Independence day. The programme was started with welcome address by Dr. M. Anand, Assistant Professor and Head i/c., Department of Marine and Coastal Studies. Following this, inaugural address was delivered by Prof. Dr. C. Gopinathan, Head, Department of Solar Energy, the Chairperson, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources. Dr. S. Kannan, Professor and Head, Department of Environmental Studies, felicitated the gathering. Dr. R. Rajesh, Assistant Professor and Head (i/c) Department of English Language Studies, Dr. B. Vijay Bhaskar, Assistant Professor and Head i/c., Department of Bioenergy, Guest faculties, Research scholars, non-teaching staffs and students were participated in this programme. The talk on “Sea Exports during V.O.C. period” was delivered by the following students:

The following were the highlight points by the students during the speech.

Ø  Theme: India First ; Always First

Ø  „Be Indian Buy Indian‟

Ø  Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company

Ø  V.O. Chidambaram started an Indian-owned shipping company. He registered the Swadeshi Shipping Company in October 1906. The capital of the company was ten lakh rupees. The number of shares was 40,000 and the face value of each share was Rs. 25/-. Any Asian could become a shareholder. The director of the company was Pandi Thurai Thevar, Zamindar of Palavanatham and the founder of "Madurai Tamil Sangam”

Ø  Realizing the need for the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to own its own vessels, Chidambaram Pillai travelled around India selling shares in the company to raise capital. He vowed, "I will come back with ships. Otherwise I will perish in the sea". He managed to secure sufficient funds to purchase the company's first ship, the S.S. Gallia; shortly afterwards, they were able to acquire the S.S. Lavo from France.

Ø  Import of pulses, grains, coal, cotton, copra etc. and export of various items including palmyrah stalks, palmyrah fibres, dry fish, salt, cotton yarn and senna leaves to and from neighboring countries were carried out.




Based on the content and speech delivery, following students were awarded first and second prize.

2.       2nd Prize -Ms. F. Crossline Ajona

 

And all the students who delivered the speech were presented with consolation prize.
